AV Group receives $36.3 million

Wed 28 Jul 2010 10:01:48 AM EDT

The AV Group, who runs the AV Nackawic mill and the AV Cell mill in New Brunswick, are receiving $36.3 million from Natural Resources Canada's Pulp and Paper Green Transformation program.

The company produces dissolving pulp, the main material used to make viscose staple fibre, otherwise known as rayon.

The Green Transformation program allows Canadian pulp and paper companies that produce black liquor - a liquid byproduct of the chemical pulping process that's used to generate renewable energy - to access the fund.

The AV Group is a partnership of Aditya Birla Group of India and Quebec-based Tembec. The Group took over the St. Anne Nackawic Pulp mill and have consistently re-invested in the mill since reopening it in January 2006.

The company is in the process of increasing capacity at the mill so it can produce 600 tonnes of product a day, up from 480 tonnes.
