Carrier Lumber workers win millions in severance

Wed 08 Sep 2010 05:43:45 AM EDT

When Carrier Lumber permanently closed its sawmill in Valemount, British Columbia in 2009, close to 200 people were out of work.

Yesterday, British Columbia's Labour Relations Board has upheld a ruling that will see the employees finally receive their severance - 10 days pays for every year worked.

The severance has been delayed because when the United Steelworkers Local 1-417 was issued an arbitration award last January, Carrier Lumber alleged that it was denied a fair hearing.

Even after yesterday's decision, Carrier Lumber is still considering its legal options, which include the possibility of another appeal.
