Germany's Lott Paper wants former Grand Falls-Windsor paper mill in Newfoundland

Fri 25 Jun 2010 07:15:31 AM EDT

German company Lott Paper wants to reopen the former AbitibiBowater paper mill in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland.

Lott Paper wants to fill the market void left in Germany since AbitibiBowater idled the mill.

The province of Newfoundland and Labrador wants to take a cautious approach to Lott Paper's proposal. Natural Resources Minister Kathy Dunderdale believes the proposal is solid, but still wants to take a few months to go over the business plan, looking especially for what the proposal will cost taxpayers.

Full details of Lott Paper's proposal are not public, but it is known that Lott's general plan is to buy the mill and use the local wood supply to feed its paper machines. Additionally, the hydro assets that the province expropriated after AbitibiBowater closed the mill will remain in the province's control.
