The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund is giving Kenora Forest Products a grant of $25,000.
The company will use the money to conduct a feasibility study to look at the idea of developing a biomass energy plant.
Kenora Forest Products is looking into biomass not only as an alternative energy source, but also as a wood pellet production facility.
The mill has been shut down for 2 years due to poor lumber markets.
The company has also been waiting for the Provincial Government to announce details of the community forestry licence for the Whiskey Jack Forest, which would give the mill better access to wood.
