The Manitoba Government has appointed Michael Werier as a mediator to address the labour dispute at Tembec's Pine Falls newsprint mill that resulted in the locking out of 270 employees for the last 3 weeks.

Michael Werier is a lawyer from Winnipeg who has experience in negotiation and arbitration.

Tembec said on September 1st that it needed an "immediate and significant reduction" in labour costs at the paper mill in order to keep it competitive in a radically changed market for newsprint.
