Ontario passes on St. Marys Paper's cogen proposal

Sat 15 Aug 2009 10:37:01 PM EDT

St. Marys Paper in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario has said its cogeneration plans were essential to their paper mill's survival.

St. Marys Paper proposed a 35 MW multi-million-dollar cogeneration facility when Ontario asked for applicants for 10 year purchase agreements for a total of 100 MW. Potential projects had to have minimum 10 MW capacity, be fueled by either biomass, biofuel, biogas or landfill gas, and enter commercial operation by no later than June 2014.

Unfortunately, the province of Ontario seems to have passed on their proposal.

Friday, the Ontario Power Authority announced it would enter into agreement with a numbered company, 1721027 Ontario Inc., to design, build and operate a 15MW renewable- fuelled CHP facility near Hornepayne, adjacent to Olav Haavaldsrud Timber Co. Ltd.
