The province of British Columbia has given permission for West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. to purchase a tree farm and forest license in the Kamloops Timber Supply Area.
West Fraser began the process early in 2008 to purchase the licences from Weyerhaeuser but the delay in completing the sale was due to a competition review. The Ministry of Forests and Range had to go through a competition review with three other firms, including West Fraser, Weyerhaeuser and Interfor. The review was also expanded to include First Nations.
The forest licenses will be used beginning this year and is expected to benefit mills in 100 Mile House, Chasm, and Williams Lake.
The annual allowable cut of approximately 682,000 cubic metres per year includes a 200,000 cubic metre temporary uplift because of the mountain pine beetle.
