Canfor Pulp Ltd. Partnership has a plan for reducing the odour that is produced from its mills in Prince George, British Columbia, but they have not yet decided if they will implement their plan.
Last year, the company commissioned a study to pinpoint the odour sources at Northwood, P.G. Pulp and Paper, and Intercontinental. Then the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada preformed computer dispersion modelling to produce a list of sources that had the greatest impact on odour levels in the community.
Canfor wants to be careful they only invest in changes that will bring real changes. Back in the late 1980's, they went through this process to reduce odours and the process resulted in several failed projects.
The B.C. Ministry of Environment is aware of Canfor's odour-reducing plans, but notes any project is voluntary. There are no provincial regulations stipulating that Canfor Pulp must reduce odour emissions.
