A green pulp mill that is tree-free?

lun 14 jun 2010 07:29:02 EDT

Prairie Pulp and Paper aims to produce a high-quality, eco-friendly paper from wheat and flax straw in southern Manitoba.

The company is backed by a group of investors that includes actor Woody Harrelson.

Now the provincial and federal government have chipped in $400,000.

Both Staples and Office Depot have expressed interest in the product.

If the mill is established, the company plans to produce 200,000 tonnes of paper annually and employ 300 to 500 people.

Farmers near Winnipeg are currently burning their excess wheat straw, and instead could find a market for that waste.
