The United Steel Workers (USW), who represents the unionized woodland workers at AbitibiBowater's mill in Thunder Bay, Ontario have announced that their workers have voted 72% in favour of a deal designed to cut the costs of the mill.
No workers will be laid off as part of the deal, but the concessions do include a $1.50/hr wage cut.
USW union president Joe Hanlon calls the deal between the company and union a positive step forward. "It gives the company an opportunity now to hopefully keep this mill open and continue moving forward," he said. "Because I think all the pieces of the puzzle are almost done."
The deal goes into affect on November 1st, 2009.
