The town of Beaupré, Quebec has received court authorization to seize and sell the assets of the AbitibiBowater mill in their town, unless AbitibiBowater pays $700,000 in overdue taxes.
AbitibiBowater has listed the Beaupré mill as one of four idled mills it intends to sell to American Iron & Metal for $8.7 million.
The Beaupré mill shut down in October. 340 people were put out of work. Several of the workers claim they are still owed severance pay.
The unpaid tax bill has accumulated since last June and represents 12% of the town's operating budget.
