In August of 2008, charges were laid against Cascades Canada, owner of the Norampac Paper mill in Trenton, Ontario for discharging a "black particulate".
Today Cascades Canada plead guilty to two charges of discharging or allowing black particulate contaminate into the environment and "failing to do everything practicable to prevent harming the environment and to restore it." The company has been filed $100,000.
Two other charges of discharging or allowing black particulate contaminate into the environment, laid by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment last year, were dropped in exchange for the guilty plea.
A company spokesman says a steam reformer, used to reuse steam as an energy source, malfunctioned in February of 2007 allowing black particulate to escape.
