Four companies have been approved to generate and sell power to BC Hydro by burning waste wood in pulp mills.
The operations are:
The mills will produce 579 gigawatt hours of electricity, which is enough to provide power to 52,000 homes.
By the fall, the Domtar mill will be generating 200 gigawatt hours - enough to power more than 18,000 homes. Domtar plans to burn forest-based biomass, such as beetle-kill wood, sawmill residue and debris from logging activity.
