German company tours Grand Falls-Windsor facilities

mer 26 mai 2010 07:37:41 EDT

An unnamed German pulp and paper company toured the former AbitibiBowater mill in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland.

Newfoundland and Labrador Natural Resources Minister Kathy Dunderdale is warning people not to get their hopes up, because discussions with the German company are at a very early stage.

Dunderdale said the province is not about to hand over the mill to any company.

"If they're looking for loan guarantees or big subsidies from the government of Newfoundland and Labrador, that's not going to happen," Dunderdale said.

It is possible that the province will have to clean up all the environmental problems left behind by AbitibiBowater before any deal could be made, but Dunderdale would not comment on any possible clean-up.
