Howe Sound Pulp and Paper, of coastal British Columbia, has applied to the B.C. Ministry of the Environment to alter its fuel source.
The company wishes to add construction and demolition debris to the list of fuels it is allowed to burn to generate power.
“We are confident that burning this fuel will not affect air quality in our community. To be certain of this, we are carrying out a comprehensive testing and modelling program that has been developed in conjunction with experts in this field and Ministry of Environment staff,” said Al Strang, manager of environment and external relations for Howe Sound Pulp and Paper.
With a temporary permit in place, the mill has been burning the new fuel sources since December to study any potential environmental effects.
