It is getting cold. Will someone please heat our idled mills?

It is a concern shared by several communities across our country - will anyone heat our idled/shuttered mills or will the valuable mill equipment be destroyed by our cold winter temperature?

This concern was raised in Marathon, Ontario this week. Their mill, Marathon Pulp, declared bankruptcy earlier this year, putting 230 people out of work.

Consultants studying the feasibility of the mill reported last week that keeping the heat on this winter is important to preserve the mill's assets.

Earlier this week, officials from Tembec and the United Steelworkers Union met to discuss the situation, but neither party committed to heat the mill.

Marathon mayor Rick Dumas said the cost to keep the heat on for the winter could run as high as $5 million.

There is a commitment from those involved to meet again to discuss the options for Marathon Pulp. No specific date for any potential future meeting was provided.
