Tembec today confirmed that a fire occurred at its sawmill in Canal Flats, British Columbia. The fire was discovered at 10:30 Saturday evening and was quickly contained. Damage was restricted to the area housing the control centre for the sorting area of the mill. There were no injuries or environmental issues as a result of the fire.
Initial estimates indicate that the sawmill will be down for approximately two weeks and that the cost to repair fire-related damage will be less than $500,000. This will be confirmed following a more detailed review over the next couple of days. Employees will be advised as information becomes available.
Officials from the Fire Commissioner's Office will be on site today and relevant B.C. government departments are also being notified.
Tembec wishes to thank the fire brigades from the communities of Canal Flats and Fairmont for their prompt response, as well as site employees who also responded.
