Northwestern Ontario saw a record low number of forest fires year with only 194 fires. Last year the region saw 218 forest fires - a number still considered as very moderate.
Although the number of fires this year was at a record low, the damage done by the fires was much higher.
Forest fires destroyed about 13,934 hectares of forest land, while about average with years before, was up substantially from the 1,215 destroyed in 2008.
Due to the calm fire season, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources were able to load their personnel, equipment, and aerial support to other jurisdictions throughout the summer.
