Steelworkers will initiate private prosecution against Weyerhaeuser for the death of a sawmill worker in 2004

The United Steelworkers will be launching a private prosecution in the Westminster Provincial Courthouse in British Columba today, alleging that the Weyerhaeuser Company Ltd. was criminally negligent in the death of sawmill worker Lyle Hewer on November 17, 2004.

At 1pm this afternoon, the United Steelworkers Western Canada District Director Stephen Hunt and their criminal lawyer Glen Orris, Q.C. will hold a press conference on the steps of the BC Provincial Courthouse in downtown New Westminster to explain this unprecedented action and its relationship to the 2004 "Westray" Amendments to the Criminal Code.
