Taan Forest and B.C. Timber Sales aiming for FSC certification

mer 22 sep 2010 12:23:58 EDT

The Haida Nation's Taan Forest and BC Timber Sales jointly manage 270,000 hectares of working forests on Haida Gwaii (previously known as the Queen Charlotte Islands).

Together, the two parties are aiming to get their co-managed forest certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The certification will also benefit others on the islands who want to make wood products.

The partnership hope to have their certification in place by summer 2011.

Taan (Black Bear) Forest Ltd. is a Haida-owned company of the Haida Enterprise Corporation.

BC Timber Sales is a government agency that has responsibility for about 20% of the province’s allowable annual cut and provides the cost and price benchmark for the province’s market-based timber pricing system.
