West Fraser TimberEven though West Fraser Timber has closed its Eurocan mill in Kitimat, the company will hold on to Eurocan's tree farm licenses.

Barry Dobbin, district manager for the Ministry of Forests and Range, explained to Kitimat's city councillors that these tree farm licenses are not tied to the mill.

As it turns out, 90% of the chip volume of the Eurocan mill did not come from local logs, but rather from residue from primary breakdown mills in Houston, Smithers and Burns Lake. The remaining 10 per cent of the chips were whole logs run through the chipper at Terrace’s Skeena sawmill.

The other licensees that operate within the Kitimat district sell the majority of their pulp to Vancouver, Dobbin said.
