Will Prince Rupert take over ownership of the old Skeena-Cellulose mill?

mer 16 sep 2009 07:50:13 EDT

The old Skeena-Cellulose mill, now owned by SunWave Forest Products, owes between seven and eight million dollars in taxes, penalties and interest to the city of Prince Rupert.

SunWave Forest Products, and Prince Rupert, both want the mill sold with the hopes that employment opportunities can return to their area.

As the tax deadline of September 29th nears, the city has stated clearly that it is not their intention to become the owner of the pulp mill, but the city may be preparing a contingency plan should that happen. Mayor Jack Mussallem said the City does not want to spend money doing any due diligence on the property unless it has to.

SunWave Forest Products presently has five staff out at the Watson Island mill site - a manager, security and people doing maintenance to sustain the buildings. Someone is leasing a large warehouse at the site to store containers with logs, lumber and aluminum ingots from the smelter in Kitimat, and the city hopes these leases will continue.
