Catalyst Paper sent out their tax payments last week and North Cowichan, British Columbia is feeling a sense of déjà vu.
North Cowichan received two cheques last week. One for $1.5 million for North Cowichan, and another for $900,000 for the other districts. That leaves $3.9 million of Catalyst Paper's local tax bill outstanding.
Catalyst has initiated legal action against what it calls unreasonable tax bylaws in North Cowichan. The company eventually paid its 2009 taxes in full, after their legal petitions to the provincial and supreme courts of British Columbia were dismissed. This time, Catalyst Paper is appealing North Cowichan’s tax bylaw to the Supreme Court of Canada.
Catalyst Paper is only withholding money from the municipality of North Cowichan and has paid its taxes in full in its three other communities.
